There are a lot of places to visit even in the capital city of San Salvador. The downtown area alone has a lot of fine examples of beautiful 19th century buildings. One thing great about the city is its grid pattern makes getting around easy. The attractions are also located close to each other like the plazas and the parks where you can relax and enjoy the attractions.

A must see place in the city is the Botanical Gardens of La Laguna. It is located in the crater of an extinct volcano while being surrounded by a small tropical forest. In this 7 acre garden you would learn a lot about the rich flora and fauna of the country.

El Salvador was once a part of the Mayan Empire and now has a lot of archaeological sites. One popular site is the Joya de Ceren. It is a Mayan site buried under volcanic ash spewed by the Loma Caldera volcano 1400 years ago. Commonly known as the “Pompeii of the Americas”, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a very interesting place to visit.

Are you in the mood for trekking? Then go to Monte Cristo forest. Its 2418 meter summit marks the borders of El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. It is being protected by these 3 countries. Its forest contains the greatest diversity of wildlife in Central America.

A major tourist attraction of the country is its beaches. The Pacific coast is only 30 minutes away from San Salvador. The black sand coastline stretches for 188 miles and you could stay in one of the major resorts located on the coast.
